Gooblox: Falling Blocks and Colour Chain Reactions
Take the falling pieces of Tetris, add the colour groups of Puyo Puyo and a pinch of Columns, and you get Gooblox. Pieces drop into a narrow well, break apart when they land, and every group of four blocks of the same colour vanishes. Prof Goo cheers you on from the side of the screen… and you have two minutes to rack up the biggest score you can.
Three great classics in one
Tetris, invented in 1984 by the Russian Alexey Pajitnov, made falling pieces of four squares famous. A few years later, Columns and then Puyo Puyo focused on a different pleasure: matching colours to set off cascades of disappearing blocks.
Gooblox borrows from each. The pieces have Tetris shapes, but you are not trying to complete lines. Colours are what matter: four identical blocks touching each other, and they are gone. The result is gentler than Tetris, where one badly placed piece is never a disaster.
Taking the controls
- Click “click to play”, then wait for “Ready” and “Go”.
- With the keyboard: the left and right arrows move the piece, and the up arrow rotates it.
- Hold the down arrow to speed up the fall. The space bar drops the piece in one go.
- With the mouse: move the pointer left or right to guide the piece, click to rotate it, and keep the button pressed to make it fall faster.
- The next piece is shown at the top right, under “Next”: look at it to plan ahead.
Pieces that come apart as they land
The well is only 8 columns wide, and blocks come in 4 colours. Each piece is made of four blocks and always contains two different colours. That is the clever part: you are not placing one colour, you are placing two at once.
The moment the piece touches the bottom or the stack, it breaks. Each block then falls separately, as low as it can go. So a piece placed at an angle never leaves a gap underneath.
As soon as 4 or more blocks of the same colour touch along their sides, they disappear. Each block removed this way is worth 10 points, and the “Blocks” counter on the right keeps the total of blocks destroyed during the game.
Chain reactions: from X2 to “Awesome”
When a group disappears, the blocks above it fall in turn. If they form a new group of four, that one vanishes too: this is a chain reaction. The game then shows “X2”, then “X3”, and so on, and Prof Goo is delighted.
Points are multiplied by the step of the chain. A group of 4 blocks earns 40 points on its own, 80 at the second step of a chain, 120 at the third. Long chains are celebrated with messages: “Great” at the third link, “Super” at the fifth, “Excellent” at the seventh and “Awesome” at the ninth.
To prepare a chain, stack colours in layers on purpose: say three blues underneath and three reds on top. When the fourth blue arrives, the blues go, the reds drop… and may find a fourth red waiting for them.
Bonus blocks rising from below
Gooblox never lets the well run empty. When your stack gets too low, new rows of blocks rise up from the bottom of the screen. Some of these blocks carry a symbol: those are the bonuses.
There are three. The first clears the whole row it sits in. The second clears its whole column. The third, the most powerful, removes every block of its colour across the entire board. To set one off, simply include it in a group of four. Each bonus triggered adds 100 points, on top of the blocks it takes away and any chains it may start.
Two well-filled minutes
A game lasts 2 minutes, shown in the “Time” counter. The clock pauses briefly during explosions while the blocks fall back down. In the last twenty seconds, an alarm lights up and Prof Goo starts to worry. The game can also end early if the blocks reach the top of the well.
The game recommends the keyboard for faster play: if you have not pressed a key for a few seconds, the keyboard picture flashes as a reminder. But the mouse works perfectly well to get started.
At 3,500 points, the wheel of fortune unlocks and you win cards for your Goobox album. Below the game, your friends’ leaderboard, weekly or all-time, shows who is ahead, and the “Challenge Friends!” button gets the competition going again.
Frequently asked questions
- Do I need to complete lines as in Tetris?
- No. In Gooblox, colours are what count: 4 or more blocks of the same colour touching along their sides disappear.
- Why do pieces break when they land?
- That is the rule: each block falls on its own as low as it can. That way, a piece never leaves a gap beneath it.
- How do I rotate a piece?
- With the up arrow on the keyboard, or with a simple mouse click.
- What is a combo in Gooblox?
- When one group disappearing makes other blocks fall and form a new group. Points are then multiplied: X2, X3 and so on.
- What do the blocks with a symbol do?
- They are bonuses: they clear a row, a column or every block of one colour. Each one adds 100 extra points when it goes off.
- How long does a game last?
- Two minutes, unless the blocks reach the top of the well before the end.

Tre grandi classici in uno
Domande frequenti
I punti vengono moltiplicati: X2, X3 e così via.
